As a musicologist, Brad Mahon's research interests include topics related to the guitar—its history, performance practice, pedagogy, and cultural impression. He has acted as a reviewer for Oxford University Press, Frederick Harris Music, Wilfred Laurie University Press and his work has been presented at conferences hosted by the Canadian University Music Society, the American Musicological Society, the International Guitar Symposium, and published in Soundboard , the journal of the Guitar Foundation of America. Brad's current focus is a reworking of his 2007 doctoral dissertation for commercial publication. The study was completed under the mentorship of Dr. Victor Coelho and examines the institutionalization of the guitar from many interdisciplinary perspectives winning a Graduate Fellowship Award from the province of Alberta .
